Mildred “Mimi” Cheney Cohen, beloved wife of Porter Barrett Cohen, died peacefully at her home in Waynesboro, Georgia, on Monday April 17,2017, surrounded by her loving family.  She was 85 years old. Mimi Cohen was born in Washington, Georgia to Benjamin Irvin Cheney and Mildred Mays Sims Cheney and was one of five children.

Mrs. Cohen was educated in the Wilkes County school system and attended Mars Hill College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro where she served as church organist for 52 years and was also a member of the Scrap Gresham Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Cohen was a member and past president of the Waynesboro Garden Club. She taught fifth and six grade Social Studies and Reading at Edmund Burke Academy for over 20 years. While at Edmund Burke, she introduced her love of music to all her students. Besides musical  talents which she shared with her family and community, Mrs. Cohen also enjoyed french hand sewing for her grandchildren, china painting, and arranging her beautiful roses.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katherine Cohen Scardato, and is survived by her husband, and daughters Mildred Cohen Coleman (Charles) of Augusta, GA and Mary Cohen Wills (John) of Thomson, GA; her son James Barrett Cohen (Debbie) of Lawrenceville, GA; son-in-law Michael A. Scardato of Mt. Pleasant, SC; nine grandchildren: Mimi Coleman Grinalds(Allen) and Katherine Coleman Johnson (Brown) of Augusta; Mary Charles Coleman Snoddy (Mark) of Nashville, TN; Sarah McMillan Coleman of Charleston, SC; Adrienne Wills Pendley(Stuart) of Atlanta; Charles Wingfield Wills (Madeline) of Augusta; Porter Barrett Wills of Thomson; Helen Cheney Cohen and Henry Barrett Cohen of Atlanta; and, thirteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Lelia Cheney Freeman and Patricia Cheney Britt; brothers Benjamin Irvin Cheney and Marion Pope Cheney; sisters-in-law Sophie Cohen Wills and Willie Elizabeth Cohen.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday April 19, 2017 form 6 to 8 pm at Burke Memorial Funeral Home 842 Liberty Street, Waynesboro, GA 30830. Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday April 20th at First United Methodist Church Waynesboro GA with Rev. Sam Wilder and Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating. Burial following at Burke Memorial Gardens.  The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First United Methodist Church , 802 Liberty Street, Waynesboro, GA 30830.

Active pallbearers are Brigham Scott, Bill Hargrove, Fred Hargrove, Art Jenkins, Henry Hopkins, Tommy Mitchell, Steven Murray and Chip Barefield.

Honorary Pallbearers are members of Scrap Gresham Sunday School Class and members of Harvey's Coffee Club.
