Donald Albert Thomas

Retired SFC Donald Albert Thomas, 89, of Waynesboro, died January 1, 2018 at VAMC Augusta, GA. Mr. Thomas was born April 17, 1928 in Port Wentworth, GA to John H. Thomas and Marie Carter Thomas.  Mr. Thomas was a businessman and owned the Thompson Grocery. He was proud of his military service.  He was a paratrooper and Special Forces for 22 years. He enlisted at seventeen, served at the end of WWII and in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal ans the Army Commendation Medal.  He was a member of American Legion Post 120.  He recently lost the love of his life, his Okinawan wife of 53 years, Chiyo Tomai Thomas, also preceded in death by his son Tommy Thomas and  his parents.  Survivors are Mary Ann Thomas Sapp Louisville, GA; Joan Duncan(Lee) Atlanta, GA; Marie Carter Griffin(Billy) Richmond Hill, GA; Philip Carter(Augusta), Savannah, GA; Chales Ruiz(Carolyn) Pooler, GA and Special Friends Robert Hall and Beth Corley Hall and Grace Spires.  Funeral services will be held in the Burke Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 6, 2018 with Rev. Thomas Tidwell Officiating and Tony McDaniel will be part og the service. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.  Pallbearers will be members of American Legion Post 120. Burial with full military honors will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.
