Mrs. Doris Canady Smith, age 88, of Waynesboro, died Thursday, March 30, 2017 in the Brentwood Health & Rehabilitation, a caring and loving nursing home in Waynesboro. From her birth on November 13, 1928, to her death on Thursday, she nourished people around her with love and kindness.

The family will greet friends for visitation from 2:00 until 3:30 PM Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, with funeral services immediately following with Dr. Al Wright officiating. Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be: Irving Branham, Walter Degenhardt, Marshall Branham, Larry Smith, Bud North, Greg Coursey and Johnny Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Treutlen County High School Class of 1947.

Doris was born on a farm in Treutlen County near Soperton, GA to the late Leon and Eva (Foskey) Canady and was the youngest of four children. After graduating from high school, she attended Women’s College of Georgia where she studied teaching. Following her training, she began her career teaching elementary students in Irvington, GA before moving to Waynesboro with her husband, James D. Smith. Doris and J.D. lived for nearly 50 years in Waynesboro, and Doris taught over twenty years of her 38 years career in the Burke County Public School System. Doris was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 66 years, Mr. James D. Smith. She is survived by daughter, Kimberley Ann Smith of Waynesboro; son, Timothy Donald and Sandy Smith of Adrian, GA, and two grandchildren, Brandon R. Smith of Atlanta and Henna Lauren Brown of Waynesboro. Doris will be remembered as a sweet and kind presence in her community.
