Henrietta Hillis Obituary

Henrietta Sturdivant Hillis, born October 23, 1928, the last surviving child of Alex and Ruthe Sturdivant of Girard, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 15, 2024.  She was 96.  She was preceded in death by her 4 sisters, Pauline, Winnie Pearl, Hazel, and Josie; her 2 brothers, John Wesley and Albert, and her beloved husband Mims Bentley “Tobe” Hillis.  Sr.  She is survived by her son, Mims Bentley Hillis, Jr., his wife, Tannis, and grandchildren Mary Kennemer (Jacob) Hillis Lott, Mims Bentley Hillis III, and Elyson Scarlett Hillis as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hillis was a Burke County native and lifelong member of the Methodist Church who lived most of her life within 50 miles of her Girard birthplace, first as a homemaker and later as the Lunch Lady at Edmund Burke Academy in Waynesboro and Burns Memorial Preschool in Augusta.  She loved to cook and she loved the kids she cooked for there.  Once she had grandchildren, she retired and moved to be near them in Raleigh, N.C., eventually returning with them to the CSRA in 2013.  She lived with her family in Evans until her death.

Funeral arrangements will be by Burke Memorial Funeral Home in Waynesboro where a memorial service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, December 21 (with Jimmy Cason officiating) with visitation immediately preceding from 11 am to 1 pm.
